Eating fresh seafood in Kukup, Malaysia

Just across the Singaporean border in a small Malaysian fishing village called Kukup, lies High King Seafood – a place where fresh seafood is served every day. Their extensive menu is best enjoyed with a large group of people, so when my Malaysian colleagues invited me for lunch, I couldn’t have been more excited!

High King Seafood restaurant has a magnificent view of the water, where you can watch the daily life of the fishing village from up close. Fun fact: High King Seafood restaurant offers guests a parking lot inside their restaurant, only meters away from the kitchen! This service keeps your car cool, away from the hot Malaysian sun. And now, time to talk about the food!

We ordered a variety of seafood dishes, vegetables and seafood fried rice, and it was an absolute feast.

My favourite and definitely the most special in my opinion, was the stir-fried salted egg squid. It had the perfect crunch and creaminess all at once. The curry leaves added that extra “oomph” and cut through the richness of the sauce. Absolutely loved it!

Next up, was the fried baby squid – salty, sweet and crunchy all at the same time, exactly how it should be. I'm so addicted to this dish. I loved how every bit of the squid was coated with that sticky, yummy sauce!

The cereal prawns were another highlight of the meal. Only the freshest prawns were giving them that perfect balance – crispy on the outside, sweet and springy on the inside.

The pièce the résistance was the whole seabass with sweet chilli sauce. The sauce was spicy and sweet, and the fish – super fresh. It was so good, I could’ve eaten the whole fish!

All of the dishes were served alongside a fragrant seafood fried rice and mixed vegetables, which complemented the meal perfectly.
