Diego’s Burgers serves delicious hamburgers and does so consistently with high quality products. I’ve visited Diego’s a few times already, but their special menu to celebrate their fifth anniversary, took me back to this excellent restaurant and I was curious to try some of the unique dishes from this celebratory menu.

The hamburger restaurant is located at the base of the iconic Erasmus Bridge, in the trendy Kop van Zuid neighbourhood. As you enter the restaurant, you’ll see the open kitchen right in front you. Here’s a tip: before you walk over to your table, take a peek inside and see Chef Diego in action while he grills beef patties on high heat!

Beef Tataki

From the anniversary menu, I tried the beef tataki as a starter and loved the burst of flavours that came with each bite. A pungent mustard taste cut across the soft textures of the slightly torched slices of beef. The micro herbs and the pickled onions added some freshness. But on the beef, I also noticed something sweet. It tasted like a jam made from berries. This dish really was quite special.

The BFF Burger

As my main, I had the delicious BFF burger. It’s a grilled dry-aged beef patty slathered with melted cheddar cheese on a soft brioche bun, and then topped with a special sauce, bacon, pickles, caramelised onions and iceberg salad. On paper this sounds like a regular burger. But as soon as you put your teeth in it, you just know Chef Diego’s hamburgers are at another level. It’s how the patty is burnt on the edges, how the beef fat is completely absorbed into the bun, and how the juices drip through your fingers and cover your hands, making it almost impossible to eat the burger in the first place. All of this distinguishes Diego’s burgers from all other burgers that I’ve come across in the Netherlands.

Parmigiano and truffle mayo fries

As a side, I had to have the parmigiano and truffle mayo fries. They are French fries, covered in truffle mayonnaise, and topped with a mountain of grated parmigiano cheese. I could’ve eaten that as my dinner, it was that good!

Chef Diego is in the process of setting up a new smash burger restaurant under the label of Smash Rotterdam. He hopes to launch this summer and I will definitely be one of the first customers to stand in line!
